Definition of What We Do

Aquatic Alternatives is dedicated to
developing wild or nearly wild trout populations that have a distinct genetic heritage.
In these wild habitats, trout are capable of:

trout are capable of
  • Withstanding environmental stressors unique to various drainage's;
  • Reproducing in numbers sufficient to meet the recreational demands on the population without the need for restocking on an annual basis.

"Our goal is to define the difference between trout as an agricultural product
and trout as a genetic resource for the future and the stability that a diverse
wild population represents for a healthy ecosystem."

We recognize diverse wild populations make a healthy and stable ecosystem.
As well as:
trout

  1. The need for recreational benefits derived
    from fishing;
  2. The opportunity for people to interact with
    wild trout populations is mutually beneficial.

"We accomplish this goal by treating the ecosystem as a
whole, where all parts of the ecology are interrelated and
vital to the health of the whole."

We address upland issues and human impacts that directly affect the aquatic component of the ecosystem. We do not shy away from negative influences that seem to limit populations of trout, but instead provide opportunities for populations of all aquatic inhabitants to flourish. We enhance the processes of natural selection and succession of species in such a way as to improve the opportunity for the processes of evolution to occur. We achieve these goals by building passive structures that enhance natural processes of nutrient utilization.

This includes:

  • Assisting in the development of forage organisms;
  • Improving trout habitats that are specifically designed for the unique requirements of various age classes;
  • Creating species-specific habitats.
  • Looking beyond aquatic environments to address upland components that affect watersheds, such as improving water cycles, grazing practices, and other land-use related factors. Where limiting factors cannot be addressed directly, we promote alternative methodologies to reduce the impacts.
what we do

All of our systems are natural looking and blend with the surrounding environment. We are committed to finding ways to solve problems using methods that are similar to those processes used by Mother Nature in successful environments. We study the aesthetic beauty of nature while attempting to mimic it, with a clear understanding of the processes that support life within a body of water. In doing so, we create for you exceptional natural rivers, ponds, and streams that remain healthy and picturesque for generations to come.

"We truly focus our work to accomplish artful interpretations of nature."
